Motorazr VE20 Alltel - RINGTONES
Hey-Just got a VE20 from Alltel. Nice phone, outter partial touch screen works nice, but am kinda pissed. There is no way (at least based on menu) that allows you to use .mp3 files for ringtones. Even MPT doesn't have the audio studio. In the phone book it allows you to use different rings for each entry, BUT NOT to select files except what was preloaded. So, my question is this. How hard to hack it to allow use of MP3s? Where to start? Thanks in advance!

Here is what you do:
Your phone should have come with a cd, and on that cd you should have a program called motorola phone tools. In this program you can do all kinds of things like syncing phone books and updating calenders etc. but we arent interested in any of that. What we want to do is go to
Customize - Melody editor... a help box will pop open and walk you through things. Save the file to your comp.
Now plug your phone into your comp via the usb cable provided, and run the motorola software updater (MSU) and wait for it to connect to your phone, no need to click anything (30sec - 2min) if you have never done this before, it may ask you to update the software, othrewise just leave the program running once it connects to your phone.
Now with msu still running, run p2kcommander (you can download it from this sites "downloads" section.
in p2kcommander, go to option, and set the mode to P2K/P2K05, make sure that "use p2k autostart" is UNchecked. Make sure that the p2k tuning is set to "new (fast) 3g-p2k cmds. Exit the options.
In the drive select dropdown on the left, select "/a p2k phone system" and browse to a\brew\mod\my_ringers
on the right, locate the folder where you saved your rintone or any other mp3 that you wish to make a ringer, select it, then hit copy. A dialog box will open that reads like it was translated from a japenese to english dictionary, leave it open or you will terminate the copy.
when the dialog box closes, your transfer is complete. Close p2kcommander, and close msu (this will cause your phone to restart) now all you have to do is go to ringtones and set your new ringers.
seems like alot, but once you set the option in p2k commander, you wont have to set them again.
good luck
