How to disable EVDO for a Verizon V3C / V3M
| If you live in an area where your phone constantly switches back and forth between EVDO and 1X then its possible that it is draining the battery of your V3C faster then normal. Disabling EVDO on your Razr in this scenaro has been reported to indeed improve battery life. However, disabling EVDO on your phone renders you temporarily unable to view vCast. Temporarily because you can (with learning the routine) easily disable and enable EVDO at any time. The following is a guide on how to do, just that.
For this guide we will be using: * Motorola Razr V3C / V3M for Verizon * Programming Menu & test mode |
How to disable EVDO for a Verizon V3C / V3M
- 1. Open your phone. Press ##DEBUG aka ##33284 -- QUICKLY -- which is how you activate test mode, so that we can essentially disable EVDO
Also take note that pressing ##DEBUG is how you DISABLE test mode as well. If you do not disable test mode, you will get the FTS screen at boot up and when you accidently do a CLR left soft-key.
2. If you notice that the number 4 didnt get entered, thats a good thing, and means that when you pressed the 4 that TEST MODE was activated.
If you see the last 4 entered in ##DEBUG aka ##33284 then you need to press end to clear the screen and type ##DEBUG again
3. Now press the CLR button then the top left soft key. It should now display a full white screen that says FTS at the top.
If it doesnt have a white background and say FTS, then press END and try CLR then left soft key one more time. If it still doesnt work, you need to press ##DEBUG again to activate test mode
4. Press the right soft-key key *3 TIMES* or until you see at the top "ServOpt: NoChg" - "AudioOpt: Auto"
5. Press the down key *8 TIMES* or until your see a > next to HDR Pref like so -- >HDR Pref: Auto
Being set to auto means that the phone is looking for both EVDO and 1x reception, and that it will automatically choose EVDO over 1x, should EVDO coverage be available
6. Press the right soft-key TWICE labeled CHANGE or until it says >HDR Pref: cdma
This is telling the phone to disregard EVDO coverage and simply look for and connect to 1x coverage.
There is no significant difference in the strength of reception when forcing your phone to look for 1x coverage. You will receive same, if not better reception, in areas where an EVDO connection is weak and essentially giving you poor coverage and poor battery life.
7. Press the left soft-key ONCE labeled EXIT and it will flash white real quick, then appear to be frozen...
8. Your phone is resetting. You will not be able to press for NEXT or PREV. You have to wait about 5-10 seconds until you CAN press the right or left soft-key for NEXT or PREV. The screens may cycle a couple different screens indicating that its ready.
9. Press the CLR button and then press the left soft-key to get out of the programming menu.
10. EVDO is officially disabled and capable of being re-enabled. However, test mode is still running in the background and we need to turn it off. We will go back to the programming menu.
11. Press ##DEBUG or #33284 -- QUICKLY -- to disable test mode, make sure you do this, or you will get the white FTS screen.
12. All Done! weeeeee! now you should experience longer battery life which makes everybody happy. Also notice that this process is easy enough to remember and do at any time. You can quickly re-enable EVDO to get faster WAP speeds and to use get it now and vcast... its all just a test mode away :)
