Sprint Software Update Broken

Toy4x4's picture

Okay I've been out of the loop for a while now. My Sprint V3m has been asking me to update my software when the phone is powered on for the last 2 years or so. I can press yes or no but the screen doesn't go away and the phone never updates!! Pressing the Red / END / POWER button is the only way to clear the update SW screen. I have been dealing with this but now my phone has started throwing the update screen at me every so often for the last couple of days. My phone has also just randomly turned itself off three times today!!! Also my ringer has been changed to the default ring volume twice for no reason I keep it on vibrate 24/7 and it has changed to ring level 3 by itself not due to the shutting down as I checked that it was on vibrate each time I turned the phone back on. Battery is good so it shows charged and I have charged it some more in case. How do I get it to update????

I have done the obvious pulled the battery, shutdown, ect. Still have random screen to update showing up.

SW version: 24.2_00.37.00R - This is what is listed under phone info / version menu.
Note this is what came on my phone when I purchased - as it is written on the tag under battery.

I have seen other listings about this update problem on a diff site but found no solution.
There is some mention of a hex # and its not able to update what is this all about.

Forgive me If there is already a topic about this problem. I searched briefly but found no solutions short of visiting the dreaded sprint store. Trust me I have never been helped there before so I would rather find a way to fix it myself.

Try downloading MSU and the drives for the phone. Install the drivers first then install MSU. After which time hook your phone up and let MSU look for the update on Moto server. If there is an update follow the screen prompts and it should update the firmware for you.

Or worse case you could just use this link and downalod the most current version posted and flash it yourself using RSD Lite

Okay thanks I just tried my luck with the msu but unfortunately it says my device is not in warranty. I have had my razr for just over 2 years now. Is there a way to get around this with msu?

I have not tried the RSD lite yet so I may give that a shot. But my phone is still on the fritz all this week and today it is complaining that of "invalid Battery" and it won't charge even with the OEM Motorola ac charger??? Just says "wrong battery unable to charge" and then "Charging is disabled". I might just have a battery prob. IDK. I will try my old OEM battery when I get home tonight. It is charging now with the phone turned off -- weird??
I wonder if Sprint has loaded a virus onto my phone to render it interoperable so I will get a new phone and renew my contract. It only makes me more determined to fix it.

I doubt that Sprint would do that. And I have been reading a little about this new MSU thing as well. I think you can still try it, but first sort out your battery problems and then we go from there.

good luck

yea for sure figure the battery thing out first before anythign else. You'd be surprise how a bad battery can make things act all wierd. So with that said IMO I'd deal with it first long before flashing the device.

AS for the MSU thing there is no way around it as far as I've heard. They have changed it to the point of once a device is out of warranty it can no longer be updated threw the software. Word I've heard is they want it that way so people will go update there phones and not continue using older stuff. And the reason for that is depending on the carrier when you update they may have a requirement to change calling plans.

Sorry been way too busy lately. I think it was just an isolated incident as it hasn't happened since. However, I put my old battery back in and I still had the same issues with the freezing up, the software update screen popping up all the time, and the phone powering off every few minutes. So I ruled out the bat I guess. Besides both where original moto razr bats. The only diff was the one I use is newer from a at&t razr so it holds a better charge. Charging seems to be working fine now with either bat.

Meanwhile:
In a desperate attempt this weekend I did a phone reset. It's supposed to set phone to default sprint settings. However this didn't appear to fix anything. I still had same problems. So the next day I pulled the phone apart and cleaned it thoroughly with some cotton swaps to remove the dust and lint deposits then I polished some of the metal contacts with an eraser to help conductivity. When I put it back together and fired it up I noticed it didn't prompt me for a software update like it used to. When I tried to make a phone call I got a sprint message saying my phone was not activated. I looked at my phone# under the phone info menu and it showed up as 000-000-**** The last 4 didn't match my # and the first 6 were all 0's. Strange. The MSID # was the same way. I then tried to access the security menu but my lock code didn't work. It used to be set to the last 4 digits of my phone# but not now! Turns out it was set to the last 4 digits of the new 000-000-**** number. --I have no idea how this came about.
It was either the reset or the cleaning.
Today I contacted sprint and reactivated the phone via changing my phone# back and my MSID back to what it was supposed to be and I haven't had any more problems thus far. I have restarted the phone a few times and the software update screen has yet to appear! I just hope that it is back to normal now but I don't count on it. I will keep every here posted. Thanks for your help thus far. I may have to do a flash if it begins to malfunction again. Eye-wink

Curious when you say reset what do you mean in specific. Did you reset by flashing with a Monster flash file. Or did you do a Master Reset or Master Clear on the device.

Reason for me asking is I can then maybe explain why your phone was not active/programmed correctly.

No I didn't do any flashing. Its just a menu item that resets things like ringtones and screen settings etc. I'm not real familiar with the details its first time I have tried it. Here is all what the manual has to say about it.

Resetting Your Phone:
Resetting the phone restores all the factory defaults,
including the ringer types and display settings. Contacts,
Call History, Calendar, and Messaging are not affected.
To reset your phone:
1. Select M > Settings > Security,
2. Enter your lock code. (The Security menu is displayed.)
3. Select Reset Phone. (A disclaimer is displayed.)
4. Read the disclaimer and press Yes (left softkey).

The Disclaimer says:
This option resets the phone to PRI settings. Do you want to Reset phone? Yes / No

Well by the sounds of that it is a Master Clear. that being said when you master clear a Moto phone it wipes everything out including the account programming which is why you number was gone and everything. Honestly tho that is a pretty poor explanation of it tho if that is how it is worded. Normally you have 2 choices on a Motot phone depending on the firmware it runs one is Master reset that just reset to factory default settings but doesn't wipe anything out, and Master Clear which is a full reset to stock including wiping everything out and all programming on the device which is what happened to you.

Pyde your right on. I tried the reset again just for giggles and it changed my phone#, MSID#, and lock-code back to the 000-000-****. Like you said I would not have thought that it would clear the account info especially since it didn't clear any of my call history, texts, contacts, pictures, ringers, etc. I did learn one good thing though and that was the ##6-digit# code to edit the phone# and MSID# Eye-wink .

Well glad to hear you at least know how it works now. As I said it is pretty poor wording but all that counts is you have it working and know what happens now if you do end up doing it.
