Overclocking your Droid
Well as we know there are SOOO many ways to go down that road and do SOO many different things to our A855 Droid phones, I thought I might start a thread about overclocking. This is a precursor to my writing a guide at my site. The reason I say this is becasue of the first sentence above. Many folks have overclocked their Droids to 600mHz, 800mHz, 900mHz, and above. But with all of the options, ROMs, etc. everyone's mileage DOES vary. But that's what is SOO f'n kEwL about this phone. We can play with it so much, modify it so much, customize it so much, that NO TWO A855 Droids will EVER be the same.
So, as I said, this is a precursor to my Overclock guide (yet to be written). And unlike the old 'dumbphone' guides, it's not YMMW (your mileage may vary), it's more like YMWV (your mileage WILL vary), lol.
My future guide will tell how to overclock a rooted A855 Droid with SPR 0.99.2b, running the 'old school' (birdman/berzerker) v4 rom, with tazmanian_droid's 'evilboot8.img' flashed and fixed with working WiFi (not WiFi tether, there is a difference). Basically, it will be in the natural progressoin of the guides I already have.
But, since this thread pretty much opens 'the ball', may as well let anyone else post their successes as well, as that was my intent.
p.s., I've flashed so many ROM's and then gone back, my phone should be f'n SMOKING from flashing, I'm back to what I know, as I have posted above.
Next?

Posted: Fri, 01/29/2010 - 07:36 by pyde_pypperI totally agree with ya bud. And it is next to impossible to keep up with all the stuff going on. I will say this these guys are just crazy style in releasing things to mod our devices to our own likings.
Think I'm off to trying a different ROM this weekend myself again and going to test out the new 950Mhz OC kernel and see how it goes.
As a side not about you writing a guide. FYI the process of using the OC files would be the same for just about any ROM you have on your phone as long as it is rooted and you have SPRecovery updated and working properly. Reasons being is you are only flashing the kernel ( IE boot.img) when using Taz's posted files. However I am curious which way do you plan on doing the guide for updating the OC file. You going to put it up following the nandroid process, or using the ADB method. IMO it should be written using the nandroid route as it is much quicker and faster. Plus you can do it on the fly and don't need access to your comp to do it.
As a side note on ROM updates and crap. I know you change up your stuff about as much as me if not more. However I also know you hate redoing all you settings and stuff. With that said there is a simple way around things if you get yourself on a good baseline. I'm now to a point of being able to wipe mine out completely (I don't/won't use update files has to be a full ROM or an android backup file) and be back up and running in under 15mins and never have to deal with setting anything back up after the flash. It is all done pretty much in one shot after the first bootup of the new ROM. The key is to have a solid baseline and backup tho, and using some of the older ROMs will not do the trick. Mostly do to the fact the more current ROMs have the entire system deodexed now. I won't go into all the details here to get side tracked but if and when you have time hit me up and I can explain in more detail how to go about getting it done so quick. It will however take at least one more go of doing all your settings manually one last time.

Well, I was thinking about just doing my guide for the OC...
Posted: Fri, 01/29/2010 - 19:26 by teddyearpWell, I was thinking about just doing my guide for the OC using the adb shell/flash_image boot method since that is the way I went. Although I can see how easy it could be done using a nandroid backup, and I think that that is what you may be hinting at with /data restores. I.E., using the nandroid backup of the OC kernel, a person would enter "Advanced Nandroid Restore" in their SPR 0.99.2b, choose the proper file (that should have already been put in the proper place), then chose only to restore 'boot' and de-select everything else. I am assuming the same thing applies as to what you're talking about with not having to set everything else up everytime, only just chose to restore 'data' and de-select everything else.
But back on track, I will probably write my guide using both methods when I get around to it, lol, just gotta try them both for myself to make sure.
But, back off track, shit now there's the 950/800/etc. kernel that I'm going to try using the flash_image boot and make sure it doesn't break WiFi, but I think I'm going to try AdamZ latest tonite first. So much to do and so litle time, hehe. The only other thing that gives me pause about what you suggest with using the 'deodexed' ROMs is the 'preparing sd card' reboot (which I had last night with Pete's beast), some having GPS troubles with both Pete's and AdamZ's ROMs, and how that may affect further 'stock' updates when they roll out. The GPS thing is big for me in my little corner of the world as the sholes.info v4 ROM has lightning fast GPS. I'm rambling, but I might go ahead sometime in the future and make a Nandroid backup ROM with my own stuff that works for me. After all, that's friggin' easy as heck, don't even think that would be a qualifier for 'dev' status, but apparently so . . .

Posted: Sat, 01/30/2010 - 08:21 by teddyearpAlrighty then. This is my first try at making something that can just be put on your (droid) phone and run. Here's the file (a self-extracting .rar):
http://ted.servepics.com/nap/droid/950.exe
Pyde, if you want to test it, put the 'evilninefifty' folder in your nandroid folder and let me know.
For anyone else, here's a bit more details (but not all, I'm in a hurry). If your phone doesn't have the SPRecovery 0.99.2b installed, FORGET the rest of this info. If you don't know how to work the SPR, FORGET the rest of this info. Also, you'll need setcpu to take full advantage of this hack, but it's going to be real easy to find. Download the file above, extract it, mount your phone's usb drive. Use the instructions for pyde above, and put the other file into the root of your sdcard. Now, power off your phone, power it back up in recovery mode and do a backup (advanced or simple, doesn't matter) BUT MAKE SURE YOU DO ONE. Then go and select 'advanced nandroid restore', select the evilninefifty to restore, BUT before you go ahead with the rest, make sure that the only thing you have it restore is 'boot'.
Now when it's done, go ahead and reboot your phone. It might take a little longer this first time. Once it's done, using Astro, navigate to the other file (yeah it's setcpu.apk) that I had you put on your sdcard and install it. In the device selection, use the very bottom selection, autodetect. BAM! you should have 125/250/550/800/950 mHz at your disposal.
good luck

Posted: Sat, 01/30/2010 - 09:24 by listenman20well i had not began reading up on all this hacking stuff because i had wanted to wait on the 2.1 update and see what it was all about. but now i'm thinking that whatever these wonderful folks that come up with all the how and what to do to these devices to overclock them and get them running better services that would've been in the 2.1 update, will be better than the 2.1 update....so now i have some catching up to do. and i'm not sure where to start.

Posted: Sat, 01/30/2010 - 13:21 by SailorcancerI'm with you Listen. I've been holding out on 2.1 to see what is new about it. I haven't even rooted my Droid yet.
I also just don't have the time to sit down and learn about it now. So far it has been a fast skim here and there.
Eventually I will start to do this stuff. But I guess I should start looking into it now so that when the time does come it is not so overwhelming.

Posted: Sat, 01/30/2010 - 16:43 by teddyearpThank you very much for the compliment. As far as which ROM to try, good f'n luck, there's geting to be a TON of them. For me, I'm still running the one posted at my site, albiet now using the 950mHz kernel. Pyde and I were gtalking today and he used the file I posted above over the top of AdamZ with no problems yet.
Real quick, IMHO there are two types of ROM's. One is where the 'dev' has actually gone into the fine workings of the kernel and installation code, the other is those who have themed and added certain 'hacks' to their Droid and then created a nandroid backup using SPRecovery and call it a ROM. But, I won't go into the rest here.
I am planning on writing a fuller guide for this 950mhz hack at my site tonite and might even go ahead and mess with creating my own nandroid "ROM" with the stuff and way I have it set up on my Droid, too, hehehe. . .

Posted: Sat, 01/30/2010 - 17:43 by listenman20Well I'm not looking for the themes really. I'm just hoping for overclocking and milestone browser 2.1 media and gallery and the voice to text. I know there's probably some other stuff that will be in it. I think I might go for the tethering as well. I don't expect to use it much but I'd like to have it when I do need it. I had use for it a time or two back when I used the razr.

Posted: Sat, 01/30/2010 - 18:06 by teddyearpReal quick. I'm writing the overclocking now, milestone browser and voice to text is already there. Tethering is easy with PDAnet (dang another guide). 2.1 gallery is already there, but the milestone 'media gallery' (with pinch zoom) is giving me probs right now.
