The Official Mobile Game Review Thread

So here it is, the official cell phone game review thread for the Hack the RAZR forums. Since I have played a ton of different games on my phone I figured that I should start a thread here where anybody can come and post their reviews. IGN.com, Gamespot, etc all have good reviews, but the games aren't always (in fact, most of them aren't) available for RAZRs on Verizon, which most of us here on HTR have.

Anyway, enough of that stuff...

BEFORE POSTING IN THIS THREAD, PLEASE READ AND ABIDE BY THE RULES FOUND BELOW (AND IF YOU WANNA ASK A QUESTION ABOUT SOMETHING JUST PM ME):

1. Any cell phone game can be reviewed (even ones no longer available, although that would be kinda pointless), from any carrier and on any mobile device.

2. Do not post reviews of games for devices such as PCs, XBOXs, XBOX 360s, PS2s, GameBoys, Nintendo DS, etc etc etc. This thread is only for cell phone game reviews.

3. You CAN post your own review of a game, even if somebody else already has reviewed it. The more the better. :D

4. You must have played through all the levels of the game at least once. If the game doesn't have levels (such as some arcade games like Tetris), then you must have played it for at least a good several hours.

5. This thread is for game reviews and game reviews only. No comments are allowed. We don't want people fishing through page after page of nonsense to get to the actual reviews.

6. Short "i luv dis game plz go by it now thx" reviews are not allowed. Here is how your review should be formatted (please include all of the required info, and especially include your carrier and cell phone type):
_________________________________________________________________
GAME TYPE A REVIEW (be sure to specify if the game is a 3D version or not)

Carrier: (list your carrier, such as Verizon)
Mobile Device: (list your cell phone, such as a Motorola RAZR V3m)

Main Review:
(Typed out review of game goes here. Be sure to include info about the game like the number of levels, number of difficulty settings, available weapons/characters/etc, approximate time it takes to win whole game, different features, etc. You can include game hints and stuff as well.)

Graphics: (on a scale from 1 - 10, rate the game's graphics)
Sound: (on a scale from 1 - 10, rate the game's sound effects/music)
Gameplay/Fun: (on a scale from 1 - 10, rate the overall fun factor of the game)
Replay Value*: (on a scale from 1 - 10, rate the replay value of the game)
Overall**: (on a scale from 1 - 10, rate the overall value of the game)

* Please only comment on the replay value if you have played through the game several times

** This does not have to be the average of the other three ratings. Some games (such as the snake game found on many old, old cell phones) will have "black and white" graphics, only a few beeps here and there, but they are very fun. A review for the snake game might be something like: graphics: 1/10, sound: 1/10, gameplay: 10/10, overall: 7/10. The graphics and sound are very poor, but yet the game is still very fun and addicting. 7/10 definitely isn't an average of the other three ratings. The overall rating might also take into account the price paid for the game. A full 3D game with amazing graphics and great sound effects and is extremly fun might only receive a 5/10 because it cost $20 (OK I know that is unrealistic, but just for the demonstration's sake...).

(If you want, you can include some other notes about the game here, and/or in game screenshots. If you post screenshots that you got from another website, make sure they are of the exact same version of the game that is on your phone cause not all screenshots are going to be from the exact same version that your phone/carrier has.)
_________________________________________________________________

If you have some comments about the formatting of reviews and stuff, PM me and I'll see about adding it into the requirements.

OK so now that you know the rules, post some reviews! :D

Duke Nukem 3D Arena Review

Carrier: Verizon
Mobile Device: Motorola RAZR V3m

Duke Nukem 3D Arena is a pretty fun game. You play as Duke Nukem, who is trying to take back alien infested areas. The full 3D graphics are pretty good (not quite as good as Brothers in Arms 3D, but very close), and the sound is good enough. It has three different modes of play, single player, single player with online leaderboard, and online multiplayer. In single player you have to play through 31 short - but fun - levels. 21 of the levels are from the orignial DN3D, and ten of them are new for 3D Arena (please don't buy the original version of DN3D when you can pay the same price and get a ton more features in this one, lol). There are five different difficulty settings for single player (I've done it on normal; haven't tried it on anything harder). It took me a couple hours to get through all of the levels the first time (now when I'm doing it my fastest I could probably do it in about 30-40 minutes). Each level (after you get the hang of it) takes anywhere from 45 seconds to 2-5 mintues. There is a feature in the options you can enable (I did, and it helps a lot) that alerts you when an enemy is close to you, and you can press left or right twice and you will automatically aim at the enemy (it will ignore up/down aiming though).

There are a total of seven different types of enemies you will encounter, as well as several "boss" units. The weapons available are: boot (unlimited ammo, extremly short range and weak attack), pistol (holds up to 99 shots, long range, and weaker attack), shotgun (you can hold up to 48 shots, medium range, and attack varies depending on distance from target), pipe bomb (carry 10 max, medium range, bomb travels slowly in the air, fairly powerful if you can hit your target), and RPGs (you can hold 24 max, long range, shot travels slowly, about as powerful as the pipe bomb).

For the other single player mode (where you upload your high scores to the leaderboard), there are only 21 levels (the ten new ones aren't there). Your score is based on how many enemies you killed, how fast you make it through the levels, and how many levels you make it through. One thing that is fairly common in this mode though is that there are way less health and ammo pickups available, which forces you to be more accurate.

In the online multiplayer mode, you can either wait for a game to be hosted so you can join, or you can host a game (only the ten new levels are allowed). You get to choose the level, game time, and number of total kills before the game ends. Once you are actually in a game (with up to two other players), you begin going around shooting your opponents. Battles usually end with both people getting killed at the same time (it takes five shots to kill someone, and the only weapons available are the boot and pistol. I have NO idea why you weren't allowed to use RPGs, shotguns etc). It isn't too laggy, but the frame rate is a bit lower when playing online than it is in single player. You can also upload your scores to a leaderboard once the game is over. Some people however (I remember one person in particular, a player with the name "eyeball") are sore loosers and will quit a game when they aren't doing well, so it won't record their stats for that round. But over all, multiplayer can be a fun experience. My main complaints for the multiplayer mode are that you can only use two weapons and that some people leave games early so it won't ruin their stats.

The controls for DN3DA aren't too bad, and with some practice they are fine for a mobile game. 2 and 8 are forwards and backwards, 4 and 6 are for turning left and right, 5 is for firing your weapon, 1 and 3 are for looking up and down, 7 and 9 are to strafe left and right. [*] and [#] are for switching weapons. You can also use the five-way navigational keypad too, but you will not have easy access to the looking up/down and strafe features.

Overall, I liked Duke Nukem 3D Arena. I've played through it several times, and at several points have had scores on the top ten lists (I have the name thermn; I meant to do thermo but messed up and before I knew it I had pressed OK), which is always cool. Although the lists reset every month or so (and the multiplayer leaderboard resets every week), which isn't cool. One other thing that I didn't like was that every five or six levels into the game you have to delete and download the next set of levels. I have plenty of memory left on my phone, and I wish I could just use five MB so I wouldn't have to download new levels every few minutes.

Graphics: 8/10
Sound: 6/10
Gameplay/Fun: 8/10
Replay Value: 9/10
Overall: 8/10

If you want a fun FPS game that will give you a lot of replay value, consider Duke Nukem 3D Arena.

Age of Empires II Mobile Review

Carrier: Verizon
Mobile Device: Motorola RAZR V3m

Age of Empires II Mobile is a scaled-down version of Age of Empires II: Age of Kings for PC. It is a RTS game of course, where you control a civilization back during the middle ages. You have military units that you can use to fight enemies with, and you have villagers (although some of th campaign missions don't have villagers, just military units) to gather resources to fund your military and stuff. There are nine different unit types (villager, spearman, swordsman, archer, scout, cavalier, conqueror, battering ram, and onager), and 15 different types of buildings you can construct (house, lumber camp, mining camp, mill, barracks, archery range, stable, blacksmiths shop, outpost, watch tower, guard tower, keep, castle, university, and a seige workshop). There are four "ages" through which your civilization can advance. You start in the Dark Age, where you are very limited in the buildings you can construct and units you can create. Once you gather enough resources, you can advance to the Feudal Age, where you have more options in building and units. Once you gather even more resources, you will be able to advance to the third age - the Castle Age - where you can start making seige weapons and other cool stuff. The last age - Imperial Age - requires a lot of resources, but allows you to create a few other types of units and buildings. It also lets you research new technologies that upgrade the fighting abilities of your soldiers and towers.

AoE II Mobile has three playing modes: tutorial, campaign, and random map. The tutorial goes over the basics, such as how to control your units and stuff. Even if you have already played AoE II for PC, you still probably want to go through the tutorial. The campaign mode has seven different levels for you to beat, although they are fairly similar in objectives, "Go wipe out the enemy civilization". The campaign missions are OK, but the random maps are a little better.

In a random map game, you choose the difficulty; either easy, moderate, or hard (hard is definitely hard). Once the game starts (on a randomly generated map; no maps are ever alike), you are in the dark age with a few villagers and your town center (your town center is a building where you create extra villagers, and where you advance to new ages), and so does the enemy. To win the game, you must prevent the enemy from destroying your town center, and you must destroy the enemy one. But you don't want to send in an army while you are in the Dark Age. You will want to advance through the ages and create an army large enough to get through the enemy base to destroy their town center. There is a 25 unit population limit, which I don't think is all that cool. I would have preferred to see a pop limit more around 50, but I guess that might have caused the game's frame rate to drop too much. The graphics were OK, but sometimes it seemed the graphics for the enemies' buildings were messed up (they continued to show outdated buildings from the Dark Age even though they were well into the Imperial Age). There was no in-game sound other than a midi version of part of the original AoE II soundtrack (although the soundtrack was much longer than your average ten-second happy-tune that plays on some game startups). It was definitely better than no sound, but I wish there had been other sound effects. The random map game mode adds to the replay value, although eventually it will start getting old.

Graphics: 6/10
Sound: 5/10
Gameplay: 7/10
Replay Value: 8/10
Overall: 7/10

Overall it's a fun game. I'm not really sure who would like it better, fans of the PC version (they might either really like it because they like anything with the name Age of Empires II, or they might hate it because while it IS a good mobile version of the PC game, it definitely isn't the same thing), or people that have never played it before (they might like it because they aren't expecting the full PC version on a cell phone). But Age of Empires II: Mobile is a definitely a good RTS game for mobile.

Brothers in Arms 3D Mobile Review

Carrier: Verizon
Mobile Device: Motorola RAZR V3m

This is going to be a shorter review cause I'm feeling lazy. :P

Anyway, BIA 3D is a mobile FPS game, set during World War II. Out of all of the ones that are available for Verizon users I'd say it is one of the best mobile FPS games out there. It's got good graphics, sound effects, and the gameplay is very fun.

There are eight missions in BIA 3D (you play as an Allied soldier); the first five are in Europe; the last three are in North Africa (desert). The first mission is a tutorial of sorts, but the prompts and hints end after a bit and it plays just like a regular mission after that. The missions are fairly long (since there are only eight of them) and they have a good deal of variety in terrain/scenery, but for the most part the missions are just “kill the enemies and you win”. Much more fun than it sounds. You will find yourself going around on foot most of the time (from an over-the-shoulder third person view which isn’t common in FPS games, but is fine here), but you will be able to drive jeeps (and even tanks!) in some missions. The weapons available in the game are: Tommy gun, scoped sniper rifle, bazooka, hand grenades, and if you have beaten the game, a grenade launcher. You can also use emplaced MG42s if they are available. If you are driving a tank, you can fire the main gun (or run people/trees over if you feel like it).

Well I think I’ve said enough. It is a very cool game, and worth the $7.49 it cost now. If you don’t like the game then there must be something wrong with you.

Madden NFL 08 Review

Carrier: Verizon
Mobile Device: Motorola RAZR V3m

Madden NFL 08 is of course a football sim game (American football), so if you are familiar with football the setting & rules of Madden should be pretty familiar.

You can play as any one of the 32 NFL teams, and either play a quick game against any team, or you can play an entire season (16 games and playoffs if you make it). You CAN'T however, play a quick game in the middle of a season. If you want to play a quick game just for the fun of it, you have to quit your entire season (and it won't save it). You can choose the length of the quarters in the game (3, 5, 7, or 15 minutes I think are the options). Penalties can be turned off, although even with penalties turned on there are rarely flags on a play. Trades can be made with other teams (even in mid-season), and you don't have to pay any money to make the trades. This makes it unrealistic (but fun) when you have Steve Smith, Chad Johnson, Terrel Owens and Donald Driver all on the same team at the same time.

One major disappointment in Madden was the fact that they left out ALL stat tracking. You can't see how many yards your running back has rushed for throughout the season, nor can you see how many touchdowns your quarterback has thrown. They do show SOME stats at the end of each game, but that is only for the best QB, RB, and WR.

It is pretty easy to get used to the controls in the game, and after a short while you will be winning every game you play (there isn't a "hard" difficulty setting). The AI is very easy to beat. I average a score of over 50 points and allow less than 7 each game. My best game I scored over 120 points and didn't allow any. This is one of the game's major problems. It can be way too easy once you get the hang of it.

The graphics are good though (although somewhat slow on my handset: a V3m), and sound effects are cool. While John Madden and Al Michael's comments are fun, they can get old after a while. Gameplay is fun, until you start winning in massive blowouts. Replay value is good, because football never gets old.

Gangstar: Crime City Review
Carrier: Verizon
Mobile Device: Motorola RAZR V3m

Based on what I've read elsewhere, Gangstar: Crime City is supposed to be something like GTA on mobile. I've not played GTA, but Gangstar sure is pretty cool. You start the game as a no-name character that was recently released from prison. You have a $50,000 debt you have to pay to the ruling gangster in the city, and to earn money you go around doing various missions for various people (you can also shoot bystanders and police officers to get cash or weapons or illegal drugs that you can sell at "candy shops" around town).

There are about 50 different missions, varying from "go take out this guy over there" to "steal the other guy's car and bring it back to me" to drive-by shootings, assasinations, even illegal street racing and other less-than-legal activities. There are five different weapons you can find or buy. A pistol (it has unlimited ammo but is rather weak), shotgun (powerful point-blank, but very weak at range), uzi (shoots very fast, but isn't super powerful. It can also be used in drive by shootings), AK-47 (powerful, shoots fast, but expensive to buy), and the bazooka (very powerful, hard to use, and very expensive). You can also hire up to three bodygaurds, but they aren't really worth what they cost.

There are two districts in Crime City; the downtown area, and the richer beach-front residential area. You can car-jack any vehicle you want to, and there are six different types of vehicles (a plain every-day car, a sport compact car, an old classic, a Hummer, two Lamborghinis; fast and very fast, and police cruisers) for transportation. Of course you can walk on foot. But with the ease of car-jackings, who wants to walk (although be careful when you try to take over a manned police car, cause the officer inside will step out and start shooting)? The districts are fairly large and are free roaming (meaning you can go just about anywhere you want to, whenever you want to), and every so often there is a gun shop or a candy shop.

One thing that I found cool was that the game has daytime and nighttime graphics. Every few minutes it suddenly gets dark, and vehicle headlights come on. It doesn't really affect gameplay, but it looks cool. Plus sometimes it starts raining out of the blue (no pun intended), and occaisionally you will see a bright flash of lightning (with no sound to follow though, which was dissapointing). Once again, the rain and stuff didn't affect the way the game played, but they added some variation to the graphics. Once you clear your $50k debt, you can buy restaurants and manage a recording studio. If you know how to operate them correctly, you can start raking in big bucks (I got to $2,000,000 once before I decided that day to start a new game). The game never really ends either. You will run out of missions, but you can keep playing to earn more cash.

So, my ratings for Gangstar: Crime City are:

Graphics: 7/10
Sound: 6/10
Gameplay: 9/10
Replay Value: 8/10
Overall: 8/10

It's a fun game (so long as you don't mind the violence; although there isn't any blood like some screenshots show), and has considerable replay value. Get it if you want GTA for your phone.

Asphalt Urban GT 2 3D

Carrier: Movilnet (Venezuela)
Mobile Device: Motorola RAZR V3m

Main Review:

Yet another 3D car racing game based on underground street racing, but this time, on your cellphone! This game has two modes: an Arcade mode, and an Evolution mode.

In Arcade mode, as usual you must try to win each race, BUT also you must avoid crashing your car, or getting busted by the police (yes, they will chase you sooner or later, using bikes, patrols, and even a helicopter!). You can earn money by taking down rival' cars, police patrols, picking the bonuses, and by simply destroying everything that you find in your way. Beware with crashing your car aganist a wall! You will lose a lot of money, same if you get busted by the police. Earn big bonuses to unlock cars, tracks, and game modes!

In Evolution mode, it's the same thing, but you must complete certain missions and earn cups to advance. Simple. If you have ever played Need for Speed Underground/Carbon/Most Wanted, you will get the idea very quickly here in Asphalt Urban GT 2.

You can select from a good lot of famous car and motorcycle brands: Volkswagen, Mitsubishi, Hummer, Chevrolet, Kawasaki, among other. From classic Camaros to highly-expensive Lamborghinis are there, so you can find the car that most fits your racing style. Also, you can race in street circuits in major cities of the world: Miami, Rio, Tokyo, New York, San Francisco, Paris and Hong Kong. The game physics are pretty awesome for a cellphone game, and you can see the sparks flying everywhere if you get too near to the wrong place... You can also customize your car: change the color, the rims, and add neon lights to the underside for extra coolness factor.

In short: a excellent racing game. It's 3D. It's FAST. It's packed with adrenaline. What else do you want? But... this game is not for everyone! Keep reading for know why...

Graphics: 7/10 - Pretty good for a cellphone (and it's impressive to see the MSM6500 doing 3D on hardware!), but there are some minor glitches here and there. The menu screens are well done, and the 3D models for cars are not bad, considering the limited resources of the platform.

Sound: 2/10 - Aside from the main tune (from Moby), there is NO SOUND AT ALL! No "vroom", no "screeeeech", no nada! Either my version is flawed, or the guys at Gameloft forgot something VITAL here... (i only want to think that the version that Movilnet sells is bugged and a update should be released soon...)

Gameplay/Fun: 8/10 - See the sparks flying when you hit a bumper, make other cars fly in the air, squashing that stupid cop in their puny motorcycle, and hit the nitro to the max (yes, there is our beloved N2O!). In one word: BRILLANT!

Replay Value: 5/10 - The game is very addictive, but there is another fatal flaw: you can have only one track and one car set (3 cars per set) at the same time! (even if you unlock ALL of them) Each other track/car sets must be DOWNLOADED over-the-air, and this means $$$ for your carrier. If your phone leaves EvDO for 1X mode, say goodbye to your balance and hello to LOAD... TIMES :( Oh, did i forgot to say that if you download a track or a car set, the ones previously stored in your phone will be deleted? NOT GOOD! This is a cellphone, NOT A SLOT MACHINE! And the initial download is heavy (about 3.1MB)...

Overall: 6/10 - This game is cool and addictive, but it ends there. No in-game sound and having to PAY several times for the same track/car pretty much kills the game experience. If you have a good data plan with your carrier, go ahead, but if not, better don't waste your money.

Midnight Pool

Carrier: Movilnet (Venezuela)
Mobile Device: Motorola RAZR V3m

Main Review:

This is a pretty neat pool game. Yes, old-fashioned pool, the same game that you can play in the nearest tavern of your neighborhood. Midnight Pool, from Gameloft, have the following game modes:

- Quick game: Here you play a standard US 8-ball game, facing computer-controlled oponents. For each round that you win, you will be unlocking more oponents, and colors for your cue and your table. Nothing else, nothing more.

- Tournament: Combine a 8-ball (US and UK variants available) or 9-ball game with some gambling: place your bet, and try to win the round. Here is a twist: if you lose a round, you will not lose your money right there, instead you will have up to two extra rounds to try to win aganist that opponent. If you win, you will also get a optional challenge (see below for description): if you accept and pass it, you will win more money. You can save your game for resuming it later, but only after defeating each opponent.

- Versus: Turn-based 2-player game: two people, one phone. Do the math ;) Again, you can choose your game (8 and 9-ball)

- Challenges: Have you ever seen those skill pool championships on TV? Midnight Pool also have some of these, for those people wanting to try something different, from the simple "pocket two balls with a single shot" to very complex (and difficult) challenges.

- Tutorial: Learn how to handle the controls in this game, and the distinct kinds of shots that you can perform.

Graphics: 7/10 - Clean graphics, very simple scenarios, bright colors... It does not have too much eye-candy, but at least the game looks nice.

Sound: 7/10 - You have a single BG music track, and it only works in the menus. On the other hand, the sound effects on the pool table are quite realistic, improving the game experience.

Gameplay/Fun: 8/10 - Billiards are cool, and this game is it too. The physics are properly done (you can even, in extreme cases, to kick balls out of the table, so watch out!). The difficulty is random, so you can sometimes being facing n00b opponents (doing quite stupid shots), while other times you will have a hard time trying to clear the table... Unlike some other pool games, you can't set the friction of the table, so for those wanting more realism, you will be pretty much limited to the stock table properties.

Replay Value: 8/10 - This game requires a lot of practice. A LOT. And if you pick challenges... In short, you will be playing this game by a few hours, polishing your skills. Don't worry, it's very easy to learn, just pay attention!

Overall: 8/10 - Excellent game, one of the cheapest BREW games available out there. It may look very simple, but once you advance in depth, you will see that it is everything BUT easy. Just an advice for n00bs: watch a few tournaments on ESPN before trying the tournament and challenge modes. Heck, watch them even before purchasing the game if it's your first time playing pool! (virtual or not)
