HTR wap 4 my V3m authentication failed ???

jga2z's picture

I've been trying for the last 24 hours to get the htr free wap to work. Keep getting "authentication failed". Been round and round here and everywhere to get to the bottom of the problem. No luck so far. I followed "how to" exactly, Using my htr username and pw, have wap enabled in my profile. Tried changing gateway ip# to 209.246.232.165 (per pyde_pyper post I read), adding deleting 2nd gateway, getting no where.
I use MPT all the time, but last week I did update which also gave me moto software updater, and moto connect, and driver installer. It's been a while since I used PST, All I can seem to get is phonebook data from phone. So I can't do any PC phone editing. I tried to download RSD CDMA Gen 5.1.6 from here, but it has spyware according to Avast.
Anybody with info please help.

Just an aside can I switch my Alltel (now stinkin VZW) V3m to any other carrier?

pw is case sensitive. when you begin the word on your phone it auto capitalizes. that's something i overlooked the first few times i tried wap. i don't know how alltel plans work but beware that free wap is most likely not free. it got termed that back when verizon still let you use wap by using your minutes. now they charge separately for wap/data usage.

as long as your have a clear ESN and the other carrier has that number in their data base then changing carriers shouldn't be a problem. but most carriers will give you a hard time trying to get that done. they'd much rather sell you another device, even if it's a free one.

Yes, you could try going to another carrier, but before you try say MetroPCS, you'll want to flash the phone yourself BEFORE you take it to them and they SAY they flash it. In fact, it's a good idea to try to do that before you take it to another CDMA carrier. Also as Listenman pointed out, though, all the carriers have switched to charging extra for data usage, the days of just using your minutes for data are long gone.

Also, there's nothing wrong with RSD CDMA General that AVG Free won't clean out, or you could get 5.1.8 from Mickey below. I'm wondering what things VZW had you 'update' that might now be the cause of your problems. Is the firmware reported in your phone menu system still the same as listed in your profile?

I didn't have a problem with pw caps.
I found a clean download of RSD cdma General 5.3.0.rar at megauploads.com http://www.megaupload.com/?d=87TR7I3W
It installed and ran perfect, and I was able to change RTT settings there I changed homepage(the one you can't change from the phone) from proxy:homepage to http://homepage as someone here suggested but still get authentication failed.
As far as WAP in gen, are you saying that now that I'm VZW customer using HTR wap will get me the same charges as using the original alltel wap?

I never actually let VZW change anything on my phone so I still have original Alltel FW/SW. I haven't really done any hacks cause everthing is already there like mp3 player, USB sd file transfer, MPT used 4 vid/pic/ringtones. I used to be able to get free DUN at ~900k speeds, but not since dec09 it went to dial up speed and no EV just D signal on phone. Might still be free I don't know.
I really love this phone so do I need to flash for some other carrier if I'm going to change to say Sprint, or amp'd or?

IMO before even messing with the HTR proxy we need to know if you stock WAP setup from Alltel/VZW works and allows you to surf. If that does not work then there is no way you'll get the HTR proxy working.

Alltel wap fine

Yes the Alltel wap open wave browser works fine, but since I don't have a data plan I may get a charge for the few minutes I tried it.

Well if you don't have a data plan and are still on a Alltel calling plan it is going to be really hard to say one way or another as to what you may get charged for or may not. Only way to figure that out is to pick a time to test data using the Alltel proxy that is setup on your phone currently. then let the system update over night and log into your account at VZW to view your bill and see what it shows. Doing so will save you a lot of headaches if you want to use WAP or Dun. I'd hate to see you get it working and then get slammed with a huge bill for the data usage.

Once you know the skinny on charges then move forward on figuring out the issue with EVDO first. After that I'd move on to getting WAP working, to lastly deal with DUN. Reason I say that is DUN is totally different when it comes to billing then WAP is

I used the Alltel wap for a few minutes, and used MPT for DUN last week(shows 1,110,098 bytes up and dn ,about the same for wap) and don't see any data charges on my account yet.
Do I need to have used more data to get some charges?

I don't know if it's as easy to get EV back, but I'd at least like to to use the HTR wap for free if it's at all possible.

I don't know but if I'm not mistaken charges do not show until the end of the billing cycle. Wha tyou saw is just the info for the amount of data transmitted between the device and the network.

I got EV signal back with change to VZW prl. still no HTR wap.
Does not the "authentication failed" error mean some kind of a prob with username or PW?
There is a current usage frame on the VZW "my account" page which shows O usage as of today.
Ther are a bunch of "data" calls using just minutes, I use "celltop" which is data using only minutes, but some of the data calls have to be from the wap and dun tests I've done.

I'll wait till after bill cycle on the 13th to go all out, or not.
Does wap usage, and dun data usage show different on billing?
Looks like mobile web (wap?) is 5.99/mo or 1.99/MB phone data usage fee as opposed to the $30/mo (5GB) tethering dun fee?

In theory yes WAP and DUN usage should show up different, but it all depends on how your account it setup. And being you have an Alltel plan on VZW now I can say how it would display.

However by the sounds of what you are stating you being billed the old school way for data seeing as it is showing up on your bill as " data calls" and not actual data usage in Kb's

As for WAP yes the "authentication failed" means there is an issue with login name or password. Another thing you could do to test WAP is try setting up a Google proxy like you did for HTR and see if it works as it should. FYI it should default to the Google home page if it works correctly. And the Google proxy info is posted here at the site just run a search for it. If google works and your Alltel proxy is working like you've stated it is not the phone, network, or your account it has to be something with the HTR settings itself.
