How about that old "View posts since last visit"
I posted in another thread that I had opened this new thread, but I guess I didn't. Sucks when all the abuse I have piled up into my mind starts catching up with me.
but, yeah, styol, in all that spare time you've got (hehehe), could you please look into trying to add some sort of extension/module to your new Drupal that will give us this feature back?

i'll second that request.

Posted: Tue, 07/29/2008 - 21:18 by teddyearpI was j/k with the 'all your free time' part, hell I'm just getting started with a CMS (joomla) at my own site, and it's a bear for an old(er) marshmellow fudger like me. But, if in MY spare time (hehehee haw!), I find a plugin/extension/module for Drupal that'll do it, I'll let ya know . . . .

Posted: Wed, 07/30/2008 - 19:34 by teddyearpHmm, good luck with that, at least in my experience. The nice thing about open source, is that it's free for the taking. The bad thing is that most of them folks aren't real webhosters, just using someone else's server (and paying for that service) and they don't have a clue as to help folks who own their own sites/servers.
IMHO.

Different content types!
Posted: Thu, 07/31/2008 - 17:46 by spikejonesThe feasibility of doing this is a little more difficult than you might think. From what i have been able to figure out (media aside) there are three content types - book pages, topics, and comments.
All the stuff in the guides section would be an example of a book page.
A thread as a whole is considered a topic
The replies in a thread, guides, media pages, etc.. are considered comments
For this reason, the folders only turn green when there are new THREADS in that forum because the module does not detect the comments after the first post. In fact, a whole thread will be deleted if the original poster deletes the original post.
In order for the folder icons to change colors to indicate new comments, the module would have to be "patched" so to speak to include the comments on made to the TOPIC.
Now, here is the tricky part, if a script were to be written to show ALL new posts/comments since last visit, it would do exactly that. You would get a bunch of comments about this video and that guide as well as forum comments.
ehh. whats up doc?
Yeah, it would probably be
Posted: Thu, 07/31/2008 - 18:58 by teddyearpYeah, it would probably be as 'messy' as the old 'new posts' (I think that what it was) link that used to exist on this new site, the one that gave my a bunch of usernode hits and such, basically.
Obviously, Drupal, although it does use the same 'backend' stuff, i.e. php (and/or MySQL?) as the old Cobalt 2.0-phpBB2 forum setup did, the extensions/modules, etc. available do not have this function. Or do not without some serious script editing.
Therefore, I will quit complaining. Hell, I'm having enough trouble with my Joomla site just posting simple images the way I want them to be. hehehe.

welp bingo there isnt any

bingo
there isnt any information on this specific instance, but i may be able to contribute some info for future drupal forum adventurers. i actually stumbled onto a solution using a module named Views. I actually was playing with the "Recent Posts" menu link and that soon led me to creating a new "View" which is essentially what recent posts is... its a highly configurable way to list specific content from the site
so, long story short, i made a new view that only outputs forum topics, and, it outputs them according to the last comment made to a topic. So, in essence, creating something similar to a "view posts since last visit" however in this instance, it will just show new posts in the order in which they were posted.
do note that even on this list, it says how many new posts are inside a topic. although it does not "show since last visit" -- it does keep track of which topics you have already viewed, assuming that you noticed the new posts in that topic. so in essence, this renders a list from newest to oldest that actually tracks which threads you've viewed the last posts in.
rock on. check it on the navigation menu "Recent Forum Posts"
just wanted to verify or add
Posted: Fri, 08/01/2008 - 02:39 by styoljust wanted to verify or add that on the Recent Forum Posts page, that it will remove the "3 new" link that appears below the amount of replies on the topic after you actually view that topic...
additionally, if you click that actual "3 new" link (or whatever number of new posts is mentioned) it will take you to that forum topic, and automatically take you to the spot on the page where those new posts are located
i think this suffices pretty good no?
Styol you are the man. Works
Posted: Fri, 08/01/2008 - 05:39 by pyde_pypperStyol you are the man. Works perfect for myself in viewing post/new replies. In Firefox this am I clicked the Recent Posts and had the list. So as a test I right mouse clicked all the new ones and opened them in a new page one at a time. Did what needed to be done and then refresh the Recent post page and low and behold it showed nothing new anymore which is great. Thanks for the effort bud it will save me at least a lot of time. Peace
