FAO: All Members... Forum Etiquette

spikejones's picture

Due to the somewhat annoying behavior I've seen recently, I've decide to write up a few things in here. At most forums this type of behavior will result in being banned. We here have very lenient rules about things, since we would like to help you out the best that we can. But we ask that in return you please abide by some general guidelines.

1. do not double post threads of the same issue
the first one of them should get answered, if not then it is likely that it has already been answered in the FAQ section or no one knows the answer. Please give time before asking the same question again (a few days minimum).

2. do not hijack threads asking questions that are not related to the topic at hand.
This makes things confusing for everyone and can likely result in one or both phones in question becoming useless.

3. do not bump old threads
there are many many threads around here that have gone their course and been answered. There is no reason to drag them back up again just to give an answer or make a comment. "necro posting" has the negative result of burying genuine new issues. Please refrain from such behavior so that people with current issues can have their questions answered.

4. please provide ample information when posting a troubleshooting issue
some things that should be included with a post are:
a) what is wrong?
b) what did you do before this happened?
-what applications did you use?
c) what model phone do you have?
d) what carrier are you with?
e) what firmware is on your phone?

(in the even that you are asking a question about how to do something, you can substitute a and b with the question)

5. do not assume that you know what the answer is to the problem
you wouldn't be asking a question about fixing something if you didn't know how to fix it, so don't assume that you know the fix.

for example:
you did something with the phone that messed it up and you get the idea that doing X will fix it. So you come to the forum and ask how to do X without telling what the problem is.

Sure enough you will be told how to do X, but doing X may not fix the problem and instead may cause more problems. It is always wise to not assume how to do things, and to refer to the method mentioned in number 4 above.

6. if there is a piece of software that is referenced in one of the guides, please dont ask where to get it at.
All software that is referenced in the guides should have a working link right there in the guide, or else it can be downloaded from the "software" page which is linked at the top of every page on Hack The Razr.

7. please post your questions/comments in the appropriate section.
If you are trying to troubleshoot or do research for something on specific carrier, post your question in the section relavant to that carrier. If you are with a carrier that is not included in the forums, you may contact styol via the PM system and request that a new section be added, but in the meantime it is best to post your questions in the GENERAL forums section. Please be advised that the "we need your help" section is not intended for troubleshooting issues with the phone. That section is intended for you all (the users) to help us (the site staff).

For now this is all that I can think of, If any of you can think of anything else to add to the list, by all means mention it and I can add it to the list if it seems appropriate.

I totally agree on all

I totally agree on all points and ask people be a little better at helping us in return with what was asked above. If need be we will get back to banning and so forth which we would much rather no have to do but if that is what it takes to get people to understand then so be it.

Oh and well said Spike

Ditto, spike, now if you could put this in a place where all will see it, like the frontpage?

hehe.. it would be up to styol to publish something like this to the frontpage. maybe he could add it into the TOS for new member registration or something. and put a time limit of like 20 minutes on the registration button so that you have to wait that long to submit the registration. maybe people would be more inclined to read the page of rules before they just hit submit.

We'll have to see if styol picks up on this. However, it did seem like there were server problems causing all the multi posts last weekend. So only time will tell. . .

TOS? What's that? jk, it's been so long since I signed up I can't even remember that part, hehe.

alright yeah ive always imagined actively doing something about educating users what to do, and what not to do, on a forum. ultimately tho guys, like i understand its annoying and what not, especially having to deal with repeat issues and lack of information.

but to a certain extent you just gotta understand that all the guidelines in the world is not going to stop anybody from doing the above described. its just the nature of the beast.

lemme start to contemplate good ways to present this info. for instance, perhaps instead of the registration page, perhaps theres some quick "post guidelines" when you're making a forum posts, like an abbreviated version of the list thats a lil more eye catching, on the actual page to post a forum topic. then maybe it links to a more in depth version or something, but yeah...

good shite. i cant believe im working on client stuff right now, its sunday arg lol

After further reflection on

After further reflection on this issue, I think that the main reason for spike's post here was due to the server problems a week or so ago. I think maybe a condensed and edited version may be in order for the frontpage, but that's your baby styol. Like you said, ppl will still do some stuff that may irritate some of us, irregardless of any guidlines. And spike sometimes can be a bit brutal (no offence, spike), but if you get too harsh, that would remove some sense of the 'friendliness factor' that this site has. i.e. if these folks were to try some of these posts at HoFo or worse, mobile-files.com, they would go down in big, fat FLAMES!

I guess now my only gig is something that is probably already somewhat in place; but for a new user to FULLY fill out their phone info in their profile, or maybe, even have existing users (from before the drupal migration) continue to be encouraged to complete said info until it is (they do that at cellphoneforums.net), as I usually always right-click the OP's profile before I choose to answer, and if there's nothing there, it's a bummer.

Just my two peso's worth.
