look at the sticker on you

look at the sticker on you battery compartment or look under settings&tools via the menus. Should be listed in the phone info section via the menus. until we know that info we can't be of much help. Reason being is depending on what firmware it has you may not be able to use BitPim for what you want. That doens't mean you can't get tones on it you'd just have to do it a different way is all.

sorry software version is what we were looking for most of us call it f/w(firmware). but sorry as mentioned you have the version that won't put tones on with bitpim. here's a link to a guide to a different way of managing your tones. they'll go in the brew/mod/my_ringers folder or something close to that effect.

Follow the guide that

Follow the guide that listenman posted, but you might have to do some more research to find out exactly which folder on your phone you need to put them on. I'm not sure if the newer software versions (i.e. f/w) have them in the directory that listenman gave you. But my little mind is hurting also . . . .

AND no real digg intended, but if you don't want to do enough research and reading to expand your mind and knowledge of your particular phone's model, the software (i.e. f/w) that's on it, and how to do with it what you want to do, well, maybe you should just buy your ringtones, eh?

I would like to thank pyde_pypper and listenman for their help. I will give listenman's suggestion a try.
I would like to add, that not knowing what f/w I'm running or where to find it doesn't mean I don't want to do the research. I found this awesome sight thru research.

actually, that guide lists

Posted:

actually, that guide lists both places. ie: /motorola/shared/ringtone and /motorola/shared/audio

I will mention though that the step he mentions in that guide where you alter the system attributes does not need to be done in order for the ringtones to work. what that step does actually is make things a little bit more difficult in the long run. when you alter the system attribute and mark it as a system file (survive master reset/clear) it does not affect its usage as a ringtone. what it DOES do is inhibit the ability to delete the file via the phone interface when you get tired of using it. When you set that attribute, it makes it so that if you want to ever delete the ringtone, you have to use P2k commander to get rid of it since it is marked in the phone as a locked system file. Eye-wink

I personally never mess with that step when i use p2k commander.

all that needs to be done is to place the ringtone into the /motorola/shared/ringtone directory (newer firmwares) and then return to the ROOT of the filesystem and delete the mytoneDB.db file. then powercycle the phone (turn it off then back on).

keep in mind that if you ever decide to delete a file using p2k commander that it must NOT be set as a ringer for anything, and further more, it must NOT be one of the default tones on any of the ringer profiles. if you happen to delete one of those files.... you will mess your phone up.
