OK, sure I probably shouldn't post this here and publicly, and should just PM styol, but maybe someone who has the access to this site should think about putting some sort of message into the guides section about the newer VZW V3m's and how the hacks and most everything else doesn't work the same for the MEID phones.
Whaddya think? It just seems as though there are too many folks with the newer phones trying the seems that don't work the same with their phones.

Posted: Fri, 06/27/2008 - 06:13 by SailorcancerThis site needs to be updated anyways. New f/w, MEID info, V9m, and Rizr info, and after that one guy we need to put in like big red bold letter that if you have to go to vzw for any reason to show them your phone that you have to get rid of the noticable hacks.

I'll 4th/5th the idea. Then when some NITWIT bricks their phone by trying some of the hacks on the site, we can say "STFU n00b, read the disclaimer".
Okay, maybe we won't say that, but I think it would be a good idea to have a disclaimer stating. "Unless you want a $300 paper weight, don't try this with XYZ model phones running ABC firmwares!"

Posted: Fri, 06/27/2008 - 20:11 by teddyearpWell, there's been several replies here agreeing with me. But should someone actually dare ask styol to edit this site? Since he does have many more irons in the fires and it is NOT his livelyhood, just his hobby?
Or pyde, do you have enough access to do these edits? Or should one of us (soon) figure a way to edit the HTML and make it easier for styol?
Just want to help the newer folks.

Posted: Fri, 06/27/2008 - 21:56 by spikejonesactually, web editing (HTML) is not that difficult to be honest with you. When you start getting into stuff like PHP, CSS, Java Script, Java, Flash MySQL, ASP and so on, then it gets more difficult to do with out some training. HTML is pretty straight forward and uses tags much like the BB code, with the content placed in between opening and closing tags. (for the most part)
If an external CSS style sheet is used to define the elements of the page (rather than inline sheets, style tags, or HTML attributes), then the altering of text can be very simple by just selecting a heading type such as H1 whose appearance is defined in the style sheet, and entering the text between the tags. There is more of course, but that is just the general idea of how I used to do my pages to keep them all consistent with out having to continually place tags like:
(poopy, it took my color attribute out of the font tag for some gay reason or other)
Not too positive what styol has been up to lately, but there are some kinks that need to be worked out as far as the registration and profile update scripting. Any of those things spit out errors but still go through. It works, but not smoothly. Thats the part of the stuff that goes beyond simple and into the deciphering mode.
I doubt if styol will give access to the server to many more people if at all. I wouldn't.. to much of a security risk. Handing out SSH access is a definite no no if you have you head screwed on right. FTP is more secure if set up properly with each user chrooted to their home directory. Home directories can be changed for each user to say: /var/www/forum. In this case, the user who owns the folder mentioned will have access and ownership to that folder and any files and folders below it, and will be able to modify and delete files at will. However when they are chrooted through the FTP server, they will not be able to ascend to any higher level than that.

Posted: Sat, 06/28/2008 - 18:27 by teddyearp^^^ Yeah, spike is quite right, I started messing with HTML in Notepad back in the 90's when I set up one of my first little 'hobby' pages. My little 'hobby' site that I run I created with Frontpage and then started using Dreamweaver myself. And, he is even more right when you start talking about PHP and MySQL as it does get even more intense, and that's what I have had to set up to start messing with Joomla. Even with Frontpage, it sets up CSS style sheets which started to get me almost over my (old fart's head).
But basically what I was thinking is that I/we could just either d/l the guide, etc. pages as HTML or better yet open whatever pages and select 'view source' and then edit the HTML if possible and then wait to see if styol would like one of us to pm/email the edited copy so that he could then easily update said pages.
I wouldn't think of asking him for admin rights to his server(s), I certainly wouldn't want to give that right to very many (if any) people on my own server.
