Can someone please walk me through getting Motorola Phone Tools to work with my Sprint V3m

First of all, I want to say that I had my Sprint Motorola V3M phone working fine with Motorola Phone Tools version 4.5, intil my phone's firmware got upgraded somehow. Now Phone Tools refuses to see my phone. Can someone tell me how I can get the software to see my phone with the new firmware? Is there anyway to downgrade the firmware so Phone Tools will see it? If I do downgrade the firmware, would I lose all the info on my phone? I am so mad that I had it running fine, then the upgrade messed it all up. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am a newbie when it comes to hacking the phone, so please have patience with me. Thanks so much!

you sure the phones firmware was updated or did MPT update to a newer version?

How did the firmware get updated? You take it in or did you happen to hook up to MSU or something. I don't think that Sprint does firmware updates over the air is why I ask.

When you plug you phone into your comp how is it showing up in device manager?

When you have it plugged in what happen in MPT? Or does it not even load anything? What are you wanting to do with MPT ( ie contact, calendar, pics, ringtones..etc).

Bottom line is get back to us with as many specifics as you can as it will better assist us in hopefully helping you work threw the issue you are having.

Thanks for your help pyde_pypper! I'm really not sure whether it was the phone's firmware that updated. It might have been MPT that updated. All I know is that when I tried re-connecting the cable from the phone to my USB port, the Razr was no longer seen. I have since, uninstalled MPT and tried installing versions ranging from 3.11 to 5.05 none of which finds my Sprint Razr V3M. When I plug in the USB cable from my phone, I get a balloon at the bottom (I am using Windows XP SP2) of my page saying "Found New Hardware Motorola USB composite device", then a window opens up reading "there was a problem installing this hardware, Motorola USB Composite Device, an error occured during the installation of the device, Fatal error during installation". Then another balloon pops up saying there was a problem with the installation of your device, your hardware may not work properly". If I run Motorola Phone Tools I choose default profile (I have tried creating a new profile too, with the same result), and then I click on cable, click on next, plug in my phone connected usb cable, and I get the exact same results I stated above. I have no clue what to try next. Any ideas? Thanks again for your help!

I forgot to add...what I want to do is what I've been able to do with MPT before, backup my phonebook, transfer my pictures so I can assign pics to my contacts, and transfer my personal mp3s so I can assign them as ringtones...I was able to do it all before, now the phone is no longer being seen.

Sounds to me like you let MPT update, since you don't mention anything about ever using MSU. So, what I would suggest is uninstall MPT again, reboot your comp and install MPT 4 and if you let it update at all, don't let it go past 4.36c, and for sure not past 4.51. Reboot your computer. Then, if you are using the Handset USB drivers version 3.5 or above and before plugging in your phone and running MPT, run the 'clean and re-install' function of your driver set. Then, go ahead and try MPT again. Let us know. The reason is that MPT will install drivers of it's own which for some reason don't work like the real driver set.

good luck.

Well, I tried everything you suggested teddyearp. Followed your instructions to a tee. Same thing as before, phone is not recognized. What really ticks me off is the fact that before, I had version 5.05 working perfectly, I don't know what happened and now the phone is no longer found. Is Mororola Phone Tools the only software made to interact with the Razr V3m? I don't think it will ever work with my phone, which makes no sense considering it worked perfectly for a couple of months. This is why I believe that somehow my phone's firmware was upgraded, and that's probably why it's no longer recognized. I can tell you this...You know when it's searching for the phone? I remember when it originally found my phone the window popped up and you could see the driver being searched, now it just seems to close the driver search box almost immediately. Any clues how I can get this phone to work with MPT? I would really appreciate any help. Thanks again.

P.S. Just so you know, the handset USB Motorola driver I am using is version 3.7 And I can't really tell what version of Phonte Tools I'm using because until it finds the phone, I can't go into the HELP, ABOUT section to find out. U do think it's version 4.21 or so, as I didn't let it automatically upgrade beyond that. Thanks again.

A balloon on my system tray reads

"Found New Hardware Motorola L7c/k1M/V3M, then another balloon that reads Found New Hardware Motorola USB Composite Device. Then a window opens up reading "Found New Hardware Wizard Cannot install this hardware. There was a problem installing this hardware: Motorola USB composite device. An error occurred during the installation of the device. Fatal error during installation. Click finish to close the wizard. Then I click finish, then another balloon pops up reading "Found New Hardware, A problem occurred during hardware installation. Your new hardware might not work properly."

Any clue what as to whatI should try next? Thanks again for your help.

Well, unfortunately the key word in your reply might be the word "FATAL". This might go above and beyond letting MPT update, mayhaps we should ask, what version of Windows are you running? If you are (were) running XP Pro SP2 and let windows update install SP3, that is one scenario that could cause your current problem. If that's the case, try un-installing SP3, and then follow all the other steps I already posted.

Otherwise, there are two other options you can try, and we can only hope for your sake and ease that option one will work for you. I have found that Windows doesn't really like you to install/uninstall a bunch of razr hacking programs, so here goes.

Option one: Uninstall every driver, MPT version, and any other razr hacking software you might have on your computer. Re-boot your computer. Then look through your 'Program Files' directories (plural) and delete any and everything that has (sometimes in 'common files') "Motorola" in it. Re-boot your computer again. Then obtain and install Ccleaner (google it), and run the registry cleaner that is has. Re-boot your computer again. And now that you're to this point, may as well run the Windows Disk Cleanup and then Defragmenter as well. Then re-boot your comp. Then, just for kicks, run the registry checker/cleaner within Ccleaner again, and if it finds any more issues, clean and re-boot your computer again. Then go ahead and start over, only intalling the drivers and software for your phone as mentioned in my previous post.

Option two: If option one doesn't work (and I have been in this boat myself), then you must dig out your windows install cd, boot from it, re-format your hard drive and do a clean install of windows. Of course, before you do that, you might want to think about the ways to backup your personal info, i.e. emails, pics, etc., but I won't go into those details here. Hell, I already made this a long enough post, lol

good luck

I think I'm going to give up. I have tried everything here, to a tee. I have gone into the registry and deleted everything with the word Motorola in it, I have tried reinstalling with the handset Motorola USB drivers, without it, with the Motorola Phone Tools drivers, nothing...It just refuses to see my phone. I have deleted everything with the word Motorola in both the registry, and my folders, before doing the re-install and the exact same problem. I really don't want to re-install Windows (I'm using XP SP2 BTW), because I did a fresh re-install not 2 weeks ago, and have the system working great, except Phone Tools can't find my phone. This is really ticking me off. Is there anyway to find out whether the problem is with my phone's firmware? At least if it is, I can always try and downgrade it. I have no clue what to try next. Anyway, I want to thank you all for your help, I've tried it all. If anyone has any other advice (short of throwing the phone away...I really like this Razr) I'd really appreciate it. Thanks again!

i assume you can find the f/w or s/w version within the menus. if so, then check it against the s/w version under the battery. if there's a difference then it's possible your phone has been updated, but how it got updated is a totally new question...if you haven't carried it in for repair or maintenance or allowed MSU to update for ya then i don't think it can update itself.

I hate to tell you this but the only way you will get it fixed or working with your comp is to reinstall XP again. I have a comp at the office that the exact same thing happened to when I plugged a coworkers phone into it. Fatal error and now none of my phones will even hook up to it anymore. Keep in mind I've had numerous phone hooked up to this thing over the years and never had an issue. I've tried every last thing under the sun, even copied and old registry backup I had to the comp and still no dice. I don't know what got jacked up or where but the only way I see getting it correct now is to reinstall.
