Anyone REALLY good with windows registry? ;)
lol ya I know there is another topic with pretty much the same Subject as mine, but im sure mine is more important ;) (Not really, sounds like the other guy is having huge problems, sorry dude). But anyways.
IT started not too long ago. I tried to open up my Zune software to sync my zune, and i wasn't able to. something about along the following.
"Please set registry key
HKLM/spftware/Microsoft/.NETFramework/InstallRoot t opoint
to the .NET Framework install location
OK"
(The OK is a Button)
I push okay and get this, "Can't connect to Zune Marketplace. Make sure no other instances of the Zune Software are running, then try again."
Not, to bad right? Can always find some freeware or something.
Then I JUST .torrented Assassins Creed, and was extracting/installing it (Never done it like this b4, kinda wierd). During the installition, it talked about haveing problems with the registry, similar to the zune thing, i just clicked ok. After installing, it said it worked and just boot the game from desktop, tried doing that, and it said soemthing once again about .NET Framework install location and 0x0002 and 0x0003 or something.
Might I also mention that the first time I installed the game, it didn't work and it told me that. There was a .txt file explaining what to do though, jsut turning off all the startup process and whatnot.
Any help would be great, and I know this is a book, so thanks for at least reading it.
I didn't know if i need to update the .NET Framework or soemthing?

HKLM stands for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, so click the plus sign next to that folder to expand it (just like using windows explorer)
Do the same for the "Software" folder which is inside of it, and then the same for "Microsoft" which is inside of software folder.
Now click ON the .NETFramework folder. Inside of it you will see the "installroot" option. We will change this after we back up the key. To backup the key, right click on the .NETFramwork folder, choose Export, give it a name and save it where you will remember.
To change the value of the "installroot" option, right click on the word "installroot", select Modify. Make the necessary change and click OK.
The install location on my computer is as follows:
c:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\
If this is different for your computer, you need to enter the correct path. You can check though by browsing My Computer to see if you have that location. If not, then you need to do a search for the proper location to include in that option. I'm not sure if you will need to restart the computer or not for the change to be made.

Posted: Fri, 05/16/2008 - 19:21 by spikejonescheck windows explorer to see if the location I have as my installroot exists on your computer (change the drive letter accordingly). Check inside the folder to see if there is even anything in it - if it is not there, skip to bottom of this post.

If it is there, you might be able to get away with just creating a new registry key value:
>navigate back to the directory in question
>back up the key
>right click in the right side of regedit
>NEW (only option)
>String Value
>Name it InstallRoot
>Right Click it
>Modify
>Enter the path as required
>verify changes and reboot computer (not sure if this is necessary but best to be sure)
Test one of those programs out to see if it behaves. If not, just restore the original key by double clicking the the .reg file you created and proceed with the following:
Reinstall the .NET Framework:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0856EACB-4362-4B0D-8EDD-AAB15C5E04F5&displaylang=en
let me know how it turns out and which way worked.
