If I delete stock files (ringers/pics) to free up internal memory, which ones should I delete?

IMHO, NONE of them! Now this is based on my experience with a Motorola RAZR V3m using Verizon Wireless as my carrier and running either the (older) NEWC_01.09.02 stock software, or my ViVo flashed NCR_01.18.00R software that I have now. Your results may vary if you have a different phone/provider/software.

I have read way too many postings in the forums here and elsewhere about people pretty much 'bricking' their phones by deleting these many (but very small) files to try and free more memory on their phone. The posts usually go along the lines of, 'my phone doesn't boot, PLEASE HELP', 'my phone no longer connects to my comp, PLEASE HELP', 'my phone just keeps re-booting, PLEASE HELP', etc. I haven't really taken a byte count, but I doubt that by doing so you'd gain even one megabyte of storage on your 23mB Razr. I would never delete ANY stock files from my phone, I would find it akin to trying to free hard drive space on my comp by randomly deleting files/folders from my c:\windows directory. That is my opinion based on my experience.

Now if you want to do so anyway, AND THIS IS OUTSIDE MY EXPERIENCE, you might be able to free a few bytes by doing so, but ONLY delete files that are NOT being used by your phone at all. Any stock ringtone/pictures or anything else that might be attached to one of your text messages/caller id's, or whatever else, you MIGHT be able to delete. BUT again, in my honest opinion, why go through all that trouble to make sure the file you want to delete is not 'pointed' to by your phones f/w, if all you might gain is enough for a few more text messages or one more ringtone?

although i totally hear yah, and agree with yah, but even if we recommend not to mess with it, people will still try it. so perhaps since its inevitable, maybe a list of "safe to delete" files would be good, only for specific phones/carriers as its not universal. even if it does mean freeing just a little bit of stuff, or heck, getting rid of some of the stuff you dont even want anyway.

back in the day i was actually able to delete the proper files, with all things kept in mind and a certain approach, and it had no precautions. i cant recall how much memory it free'd up, but if people are going to insist on a solution for something you can delete, even if minut, then i actually may consider devising a guide for it. if anything, maybe it will be a good thing just to help prevent the seemingly inevitable doom of destroying something.

if such a guide were to be devised, it would have to be very loud and specific and repetitive about exactly what phone these certain files can be deleted from (considering other razrs and carriers where there will likely be a alternate structure or actual files). perhaps im getting to in depth with something that will just cause more problems, but perhaps a method to going about it for other phones and then suggesting they post additional "safe to delete" files for their specific phone and carrier. i dunno. its been a common request for a long time and theres never really been a document solution... or maybe there is? i wonder if theres something in the forums maybe from way back when

i hear ya there. basically speaking, you cant delete any of the files that are set as a default for your profiles IE: when you first get the phone and look at your ringer profiles, you will see such and such files already selected. You cant delete any of those since when you delete the MyToneDB.db file... it resets the ringer profile to the default tones. If those tones are missing from the phone when the profile gets reset to default setting... well you get the picture. All hell breaks loose.

guide to deleting files...

NOT currently assigned to anything + NOT the default tone for anything on ANY profile. = only just a few.
