In the beginning . . . . .
I had a fair sized dual proccessor computer and an unused webcam. So I thought, why not use this webcam to show the rest of the world what my world looks like? I searched and found some software and a primitive (free webhosting site) way to do so. About the same time I joined this site. Then I thought about getting a faster computer (a Pent D805), and therefore it was. Then I thought, hmmm, why not set the the old dually back up as a server, as that is what the old dually's were, and since I had aquired some extra hard drives along the way, and use a KVM switch so I could use both at once? And it came to be.
Suddenly, I saw the light. Why not also max out my server with as much RAM and storage (aquiring more hard drives) as I can, host my webcam and whatever the heck I want to without any one telling me that this file is too large, or you can't put that type of file here, or your bandwidth it too high, or anyone trying to charge me at all for doing this, or whatever, and put it live out in to the world for all the world to see. Again, so it was.
During all these 'creations' I have been a member here and received so much information and help here, that is how and why my 'directory' was created. And now you know why it is so. In the end (almost), now my directory and my server are now refered to as the mickey mouse.
Now along the way I've learned a little more about the different programs that present web pages, and although I have been whining about some of the features missing in the new layout of this site, I really take my hat off to STYOL, as it ain't easy at all to do this stuff, and my site is just a wee little baby compared to this one.

Posted: Sun, 08/03/2008 - 03:21 by styolthanks teddy, that means alot to me. i hope that the wonderful world of the web continues to interest you, and that you just keep on pluggin along and workin on stuff.
web design is my gardening, or cooking, or cleaning, or whatever it is that people do to take their mind off stuff and accomplish a certain feat. such as gardening for instance, watering and weening a tree or flower to full bloom is much like web design. it takes time and cannot be rushed, requires attention, shifts and grows as time goes time, and hopefully eventually blossoms into a beautiful entity.
so yeah, keep watering that bad girl. start with one, then work your way onto a full garden lol. if you want to of course and it inspires you. for me, its constantly exciting and evolving. and honestly, since the original inception of this site, i too have learned -alot- about web design in general. HTR was the first actual Forum i setup and installed, which required learning stuff that at the time i was not savvy to.
You're welcome and thank you
Posted: Sun, 08/03/2008 - 17:45 by teddyearpYou're welcome and thank you back. Just so you know, the HTR articles I have on my server are not intended to take away from HTR, but as a supplement. Kind of more like your 'Help Us' article says about the shelf life of the razr.
I have come a long way from the free sites now, and I hope this ole P3TDDE with a couple of PIII 1.4's w/4g ram and my htdocs pointed to a 250g drive keeps on trucking for a while. I have gotten alot of inspiration here, one being for my 'directory' when I started finding yours (originals, etc.) posted in the forums.
My pages are also now a long ways from the raw HTML that I used to write, or even from using Frontpage and Dreamweaver, and as you say, I'll keep watering 'em. I do this after work while I unwind. Maybe some day (if I don't get too old, lol) I'll make money at it, but in the meantime, I'll have a hellova lot of fun doin' it!
oh my gosh styol. that is
Posted: Mon, 08/04/2008 - 17:12 by spikejonesoh my gosh styol. that is just so beautiful!! It touched my heart. Teddy... can we get a linky to your site? or to the web cam feed?
I used to do some web "design" back in highschool and since those days all my old sites are gone. Unfortunately, my life took a turn for the worse and i got into a lot of bad stuff. It took me into the darkest of places where no man (or woman) should ever have to be. Now that I have broke free of the grasp of addiction and crawled out of that pit of despair, I am getting back into the net technology. Im in the process of setting my new(OS wise) Mandriva Linux system up as a server. My machine is nothing fancy, but it will serve to serve. Ive got it partitioned out for about 30 gigs personal space and 27 gigs serving space.
Styol, quick question since you know more on the DNS side of things than I do. Is it possible to set up a subdomain at hacktherazr.com that can resolve to a different IP address? It'd be neat to set up a little web ring with you being the main site and Teddy having his site for whatever it is that hes got going on - my site being yet to be determined (probably gonna be Linux hacking related if i can get some headway). I could always set up with no-ip for a free dynamic-dns resolution which your subdomain could redirect to though.
Whaddya say guys?
Hey spikey. If you click on
Posted: Mon, 08/04/2008 - 19:46 by teddyearpHey spikey. If you click on my avatar, you should be able to go to my info and my site is linked there. Or 'f' it go to http://ted.servepics.com and that will get you there. If you want to see my webcam, just click on the "Randle WebCam" link on my menu and that will get you there. It's setup as an external link for now (although it is internal), because I didn't want to try to totally joomla-ize (is that a word?) it yet.
One of your posts in the 'rant and bash' thread (as I call it) already pretty much told me about some of your history, as I've been there and heard some of the same stuff. Glad you're back in the land of the living. I'll just leave that as that.
Now, the last part of your comment talked about DNS. I use no-ip.com for my DNS and it works fine for me. And I/we know that you can use it with Linux. As for the web-ring thing, I used to use that back in the day of static webpages, but it seems as though the web is going more and more to dynamic webpages. As for styol setting up a sub-domain for you, we'll let him answer that.
But, I look forward to you putting something up, as I have tried Ubuntu a few times, but lost patience as I couldn't get it to do ALL the things my server does now, and the answers in the Ubuntu forums were, like, NOT! But, I still would like to use it as xp is getting old.
Teddy.
p.s. Yeah, I guess I did steal your sig . . . . for now!
well, right now I am on
Posted: Mon, 08/04/2008 - 21:25 by spikejoneswell, right now I am on Mandriva Linux. I ditched Ubuntu, Linux Mint, and WindDoze. Was able to compile apache2 manually and set it up, then I pulled drupal straight out of the repos (which brought the necessary php modules with it.) Only thing ive to do now really that i know of is to get the mySQL server set up properly, which I will have to read documentation on how to go about doing that to work alongside drupal. When I figure it out, I'll put some stuff up and I think that a how-to should be in order for that as well. I have a feeling that most drupal users out there only use it on a server that they pay for hosting on so it might be tough to get some good pointers. I just have to dig, dig, dig as you say!
